GURU HARKRISHAN SAHIB JI AND THE BOY THAT COULDN’T SPEAK
Guru Harkrishan Ji was the youngest Guru to be given Guruship at the mere age of 5 and he showed everyone that he truly was the Guru. He showed the power of divine knowledge and the healer of people.
In another village, there was a Brahman (Hindu Priest), who used to teach people the Gita. The Gita is written in Sanskrit; many people dedicate their whole lives trying to understand the Gita. When the Hindu priest heard of Guru Harkrishan Ji, he thought to himself that only Lord Krishna can go by the name Krishna. He was outraged and was wondering who this little boy is, who goes by the name HarKrishan and why people go so far as to call him Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji.
So, he went to pay a visit to Guru Harkrishan Ji. When he met the Guru, he was very disrespectful and he challenged the Guru. He said to Guru Ji, “You must think you’re much greater than Lord Krishna? Why don't you tell me the meaning of the Gita and explain it!" Guru Sahib was Jaani jaan (All knowing). He knew that this pandit is full of Hankaar (ego). He is very far from the path of meeting God. Guru Ji had read the mind of the Brahman and replied by saying, "You think I am too young to gain divine knowledge? You will say that I must have learnt the meanings from someone else. This won’t restore any faith in you. Go outside and find anyone and bring them to me. They will explain the Gita for us."
The Brahman decided to find a poor person named Chaju, who was deaf and dumb, as well as uneducated. The Brahman chose the most difficult parts of the Gita for Chaju to explain. Guru Sahib said to Chaju, “Chaju, you will now attain all the knowledge needed, in order to respond to all the questions of this scholar.” Then, the Guru took his chadee (stick) and touched Chaju's head with it. Chaju began to speak, and he explained the Salok (passage), in such a clear way. The translation was one that the pandit had never heard such words before. He was astonished at the fact that Chaju explained it so well. He picked out another very difficult passage. Once again, Chaju explained the passage beautifully.
The Brahman couldn't believe what he was hearing. He just heard explanations of the Gita that he hadn't ever heard before. The pandit’s pride was finally overshadowed by humility. He said to the Guru, "Forgive me, I thought you were just a little boy who didn't know anything. I am full of pride and have realised you are the jyot (light) of God. God speaks through you. I am a mere child before you."
Guru Ji blessed him to become a Sikh and he began to experience the things he only used to read about. He began to live a virtuous life.
This saakhi (story) shows us that God is within everything and everyone. Vaheguroo can make people work in mysterious ways, even through children. Even though Guru Sahib was only five years old, he was so immersed in the love of God, that he made a dumb person speak. Everything happens within Guru Ji’s hukam (command). Guru Sahib Ji is capable of doing anything they want. Guru Nanak Dev Ji explains in the pauree of Japji Sahib Ji as follows:
‘Hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kahiaa jaee
By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described.
Hukmee hovan jeea hukam milai vadiaaee.
By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained.
Hukmee utam neech hukam likh dukh sukh paaeeaih
By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained.
Iknaa hukmee bakhsees ik hukmee sadaa bhavaaeeaih
Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever.
Hukmai andar sabh ko baahar hukam na koe
Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.
Naanak hukmai jay bujhai ta haumai kahai na koe. ||2||
O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. ||2||
Vaheguroo!
